I've used the bag for different situations: traveling (nothing like a hands free bag that can carry large quantities of stuff when you're in an airport with two kids), backpacking, day hiking trips, etc.
It has enough volume for multi-day back packing trips for one person and for single day hiking trips where you can carry all your family's stuff for the day.
The loop system to add attachments (carabiners, extra pockets, paracord connections, etc.) is extremely practical and well designed. The two waist pockets are large enough for you to carry multiple items (food, knife, compass, wallet, car keys, etc.). The two zipped pockets on the top lid are also practical but I do recommend getting some of the side pockets / carriers from Fjallraven to be able to carry bottles or anything that you may need to grab quickly without fiddling through all the content of the bag,
It has a good raincover and I love the fact you can wax the top, front panel and bottom panel of your backpack to make it water resistant and not get your things wet when you put it on the ground or when there is very light rain.
